5 Remedies To Naturally Get Rid Of Fleas

5 remedies that get rid of fleas naturally

Summers are great for outings, adventure and exploring. Not just for us, but even for our pets! They love to be outdoors, running around in the gardens, or playing with water, and basically coming in close contact with all the natural parasites as well! It is almost fall, and flea season is just around the corner. While fleas are active through the warm season, this change of weather, moisture all adds to the infestation of these blood-sucking parasites. It is only advisable then to be careful of what’s coming, and try some remedies to prevent, cure, and alienate fleas that will be troublesome for your furry best friend!

What are some of the remedies that have proved to be working well on our pets? Let’s find out.

Apple Cider Vinegar

An easy and hassle-free method to keep your dog from catching fleas would be to feed them apple cider vinegar. For every 40 pounds of your dog’s weight, add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to their water bowl. Repeat this process every time you change their water bowl.

This remedy deters the fleas, and apple cider is also great for your pet’s coat.

Coconut oil

Take some coconut oil in your palm, and rub between your hands to liquify it a bit. Then run your hands through your pet’s fur, and work your way to the skin. Make sure to massage the oil through the fur coat to the skin. Once that is done, take a comb, and brush your pet’s fur. You will notice some fleas stick to the oil, and come out.

Since this process can get messy, it is advised to do it outside, as many fleas will fall out.

This remedy is safe to be used once a week, so continue this till you are sure there are no fleas to attack your pet.

Lemon water

Remedy:

Take a lemon

Slice it up in several pieces

Boil a pot of water, and add the lemon slices

Once boiled, remove the pot from the heater

Cover with a lid, and let it stay overnight

If your pet is short-haired, you can now use this water to give your pet a sponge bath. Otherwise, dip the comb in this mixture, and run it through your pet’s coat. Make this process enjoyable for your pet so they don’t run away when you have to repeat these remedies on them from time to time! To keep the fleas away from your pet, you must also make sure the pet’s environment is clean, and flea-free. Here are some natural remedies that can keep your house, and garden devoid of these parasites.

Sprinkle Salt

Salt acts as a great, easy, accessible natural agent to rid your apartment of fleas. Take some salt from your kitchen, sea salt will also do, and make sure it is in a powdered form. Sprinkle this salt evenly on your carpet and let it stay for 12 to 48 hours. The salt has dehydration properties, and acts as a drying agent for these fleas. After 12-48 hours, vacuum your carpet thoroughly to get rid of the salt, and the dried up adult fleas. It is to be noted that this remedy does not kill flea larvae, but just adult fleas. So you can repeat this process to get the best results.

Lemon and Rosemary

Making natural sprays using essential oils is definitely another great way to keep your house clean without the use of any harmful chemicals.

Recipe:

Take six thinly sliced lemons in a large bowl

Take a handful of rosemary, chop them in tiny bits, and add them to the bowl

Boil one liter of water

Add this boiled water to the bowl

End the recipe with adding four drops of geranium oil

Cover this mix, and leave it overnight. Filter the liquid into a spray bottle, and use this spray throughout your house at regular intervals.

Rosemary is a natural flea repellent, so it keeps the parasites at bay. Lemon too acts as a flea deterrent. Geranium oil repels fleas, and is also antifungal.

Since this recipe is more of a prevention recipe, you can start using this before flea season to minimise their infestation.

Having some natural remedies in hand is always good, as we do not want to depend on chemical products all the time. There are so many solutions within nature, and if we give it a try, and are regular with these remedies, it gives little room for infestation. Apart from this, taking care of basic hygiene is advisable. Washing sheets regularly, vacuuming timely, and keeping the surroundings dry and sanitary are some good practices.
